South Douglas Scenic Byway designated by the Georgia Department of Transportation

Douglasville, Georgia – On March 17, 2022, the State Transportation Board designated the South Douglas Scenic Byway as a part of the Georgia Scenic Byway network.

“It is an honor for Douglas County to have a designated Scenic Byway Corridor. We welcome everyone to come and travel the South Douglas Scenic Byway,” said Douglas County Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Dr. Romona Jackson Jones. The South Douglas Scenic Byway includes approximately 19 miles located along Highway 166 from its intersection with Highway 92 to the western boundary with Carroll County. The Corridor Management Plan documents the vision for the byway and the steps to achieve the goals of promotion, preservation, and enhancement.

The Georgia Scenic Byway Program includes corridors with exceptional natural, historical, cultural, archaeological, recreational, and scenic qualities. “The South Douglas Scenic Byway includes resources that express these values,” said Allison Duncan, Planning & Zoning Manager. “This road has such an amazing story behind it.”

The designation of the South Douglas Scenic Byway resulted from significant public involvement. The project was guided by a Steering Committee comprised of local citizens and stakeholders. Stakeholders were notified of the plans for the Scenic Byway through direct mailing and had the opportunity to provide feedback through multiple public meetings.

All materials related to the designation of the South Douglas Scenic Byway are available online at the Douglas County website at https://www.celebratedouglascounty.com/298/Programs-and-Projects

Planning and Zoning staff members are available to answer questions and take feedback on the project by calling 678-715-5370.
