[ARCHIVED] Douglas County to Participate in Operation Green Light (OGL) in Support of Local Veterans

Green Courthouse

In honor of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, Douglas County Government is participating in Operation Greenlight, a nationwide effort uniting counties in support of military veterans. To commemorate this special initiative, the Douglas County Courthouse will be illuminated in green from November 4 to 11, 2024. Citizens are also encouraged to show their support by lighting their homes and businesses green.

Now in its third year, Operation Greenlight is spearheaded by the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO) to shine a light on the challenges veterans face and to highlight resources available to veterans on the county, state, and federal levels. In 2023, more than 300 counties participated in Operation Greenlight.

"Operation Greenlight is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices veterans have made, and we are excited to shine a light on their contributions," stated Chairman Jackson Jones. "As a fellow veteran, my gratitude extends well beyond November, and I would like to personally say thank you to all the veterans for answering the call of duty with valor and sacrifice while protecting and defending our rights to freedom."

In addition to lighting county buildings, bridges, and other meaningful landmarks, residents, businesses, and other organizations are encouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb inside or outside their home to a green bulb. Shining a green light symbolizes the support and appreciation we have for our veterans.

Douglas County Government will host a Veterans Resource Fair on Wednesday, November 6, 2024. During the event, green light bulbs will be distributed to citizens interested in participating in Operation Greenlight. Douglas County will also partner with the Douglas County Community Service Board to provide resources and information to aid veterans and their families locally.  The bulbs are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Douglas County’s Veterans Day observances will culminate with the County’s annual Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 9, beginning at 11 a.m.
