The board was created to facilitate coordinated and comprehensive planning and service delivery for 31 counties in North Georgia. The role of the Regional Planning Board is to give a voice to consumers and their families and other citizens in the region in assessing needs and recommending priorities for MHDDAD services. The Board will make recommendations about services and works with the regional office to develop an annual plan. The main responsibility of the Planning Board is to communicate the needs and gaps in the current service system and to make recommendations based on their findings. Each county with a population of more than 50,000 according to the United States decennial census of 1990 or any future such census shall appoint one member for each population increment of 50,000 or any portion thereof. Members may be appointed to serve two (2) three (3) year terms. Members are appointed by the County Commissioners. Each member is expected to seek input regarding service needs in their county from local citizens, advocates, law enforcement, hospital emergency rooms, judges, providers, professionals and other stakeholders.
